Taiwan, 12th December 2023 – Recapping the first-ever South-East Asia Mortal Kombat 1 (MK1) Tournament, which NEO FORZA is a joint-organizer, held on September 23rd this year ( https://www.neoforza.com/newsdetail_en.php?id=6039 ), held nation-wide in Singapore, and which Mortal Kombat 1 was sensationally and globally launched on September 14th (9 days prior the Tournament), the MK1 Tournament was nothing short of resounding success.
- International global tech media participated.
- Warner Interactive Media (Asia) gave its blessings for the event.
- Singapore’s National Radio Station; Kiss92FM promoted the event for each of the 4 days prior 23rd September.
- VIPs and guests, let alone contestants and their fans/friends/families, attended the Tournament.
- The Tournament was live-streamed for all to view.
It was hectic, noisy, rowdy, stifling, lively and thrilling on that 23rd September. The MC would attempt to contain the boisterous crowd, without success, especially during the knockouts where individual groups burst out in noisy crescendos when they saw the finishing moves and ROARed as their respective favorite contestant(s) executed their foes and won. It was deafening. The entire estate could hear the roars several blocks away. Thankfully no one called the cops; the venue was truly high on junk-adrenaline and testosterone. Inference: Mortal Kombat series were rated RA+ or/and banned in countries in its history for a reason (and we love it !).
After each round, engineers would audit/set/reset PC and game settings (which were customized by the prior-contestants). Extra high-end gaming rigs on standby for any unforeseen breakdowns of rigs used during the Tournament.
To avoiding Tournament contestation or argument, contestants were prior informed to bringing their own controllers, joysticks, keyboards, "anything-including-kitchen-sink". A hardcore contestant brought his hand-made custom PCB brick with “crude” switches and buttons, at a glance, built to withstand a nuclear blast. Another brought his personal PC which specs cost more than a pre-owned Rolex Daytona!
The nearby cafeteria ran out of food to sell. Staff had to go to the nearest Macdonald’s (20 minutes away) to buy more. Had to wait 55 minutes for the amount of food and beverage ordered and made. Suffice to say when food arrived it was not warm but the apex-predators were hungry and couldn’t care less. We ate what we could find; snacks, tidbits, left-over breakfasts. No one including the committee had anticipated the event to be this great.
The event culminated in the late evening finals which the firm favorite won. Throughout the event, there were huge upsets, scientifically-unproven raw emotions, thick stenches of competitivity and adrenaline. It was exhilarating. And when the event was finally over, we transformed back to boring homo-sapiens.
A massive shout out to all who participated prior the event, the event itself, and post-event. As of December 2023, talks are underway to having a bigger event in 2024 in South East Asia.
